Cancellations and
Make-up Lessons
For a makeup lesson to be scheduled, cancellations from students must occur at least 24 hours in advance of the lesson unless illness is involved. One illness related makeup will be allowed each semester for each student.
One teacher cancellation due to illness or family emergency will be allowed each semester, after that they will be made up or deducted from the monthly tuition.
Make-up lessons times will be negotiated between teacher and parent on an individual basis.
Yearly Schedule
Semesters will roughly follow that of the school year:
Fall Semester: August -December
Spring Semester: January - May
Summer Semester: June-July
Lesson Materials
Required materials will be discussed with parents as they are required in the lessons. Parents will have the option to buy them on their own or reimburse the teacher for the purchase. If parents choose to have the teacher buy the books, costs will be rounded up and include all expenses accrued.
Parent Participation
It is highly encouraged that parents come to lessons for all students. However, for students who are too young to remember how to implement lesson goals throughout the week, it is crucial to the students success that the parent is actively participating in lessons and practice. This is usually students below the age of 8-10.
Practice
It is recommended that a daily practice routine be implemented, however, practice requirements for each student are highly individualized and should be tailored to each student. Some general guidelines include:
-
Practice shouldn't be time oriented but rather goal oriented. If a student is required to practice for 30 minutes each day, it can be easy to fill 30 to 60 minutes with unfocused practice. Rather, an alternative could be to require the student to practice for between 30 to 60 minutes OR until they have achieve certain goals.
-
Younger students should be assisted in practice by parents until they are capable of achieving discussed lesson goals throughout the week.
-
Practice should be as consistent as possible. Ideally 6 days out of the week including the day of the lesson.
Recitals, Festivals, and Competitions
There will be three recitals each year, one at the end of each semester. It is expected that students will participate in these recitals. It is detrimental to growth as a musician to learn how to learn how to also perform the works you learn!
There are several festivals and competitions that occur throughout the year in the Kansas City area, including KCMTNA and FMT. Participation in these is not required and will be determined on an individual basis.
Instrument
Because of the need to practice between lessons, it is required that students own their own instrument. Ideally this would be an acoustic piano, however a high quality electric piano can also work. If a student has a cheap electric piano, it is expected that a better instrument be acquired as soon as possible.
Exit Polity
If it is necessary for a student to discontinue lessons, please contact the teacher regarding the discontinuation at least 30 days in advance to allow for time for the spot in the studio to be filled. Students will still be responsible for tuition through the full 30 days.
The teacher reserves the right to dismiss students who frequently miss lessons, or who show a consistent lack of preparedness for lessons.
